Design Study: SABIC's Thermoplastic Skin
SABIC is the fourth largest chemical producer in the world and the largest public company in Saudi Arabia. This headquarters concept expresses their cultural position, place and function through an exploration of chemical structure and branding.
The design team was particularly interested in demonstrating SABIC products and methodologies through the use of emerging manufacturing technologies.
The massing presents three conditions--towers, horizontal spaces, and courtyards--each articulated with a single gesture and iconography.
The entire structure is wrapped in a high-performance cloak of thermoplastic pipes. Brand is presented via the customization and transformation of these innovative plastics.
The unique thermoplastic wrapping contemporizes the traditional Islamic sun-shading device mashrabiya with an interpretation of the material's chemical structure.
Pattern appears and disappears based on proximity and light. On the smallest scale, SABIC's branding takes on a literal form.
Simulating different lighting conditions reveals the appearance and disappearance of pattern, and confirms the dimension and shape of the sunscreen.
