Translating World-Renowned Ophthalmology Center's Identity to Dubai Facility
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
First built in 1941 in Barcelona, Spain, the Barraquer Ophthalmology Center has since provided comprehensive eye care to patients from around the world. The legacy of Professor Ignacio Barraquer, creator of the center, has been carried on by his grandchildren, Elena and Rafael Barraquer, the fourth generation of ophthalmologists who still operate the facility today.
Many residents of the United Arab Emirates and local gulf region currently travel to Barraquer Barcelona specifically for medical services. This trend prompted prominent investors in Dubai to invite Barraquer to bring its expertise and establish an analogous ophthalmology center in Phase II of Dubai Healthcare City, a preeminent large-scale development in the Emirate. This will be the first time Barraquer will branch out of Barcelona. It is an honor for LEO A DALY to capture the legacy of the Barraquer family and facilitate the translation of its identity to the cosmopolitan city of Dubai.
The Barraquer Ophthalmology Dubai design has been carefully composed to modernize the historical image of the oculus through the visitors’ experience of the building. The form has been composed in response to the site, as well as referencing the rich history of Barraquer Barcelona. One design concept has the building composed of two primary architectural volumes, the first the oculus (the sphere) and the second the body (the cube). The second concept reflects the inspiration behind the Barraquer logo, the ancient eye of Udjat, in its planning and organizational principles. The design proposal for the facade references Ignacio Barraquer’s love for Egyptian art and pays tribute to the striking mid-century architecture of the original facility.
Within its 12,000 m2 (130,000 SF) built-up area, Barraquer Dubai will provide ophthalmological clinical, surgical and urgent care services and hospitalization accommodations. The operating suite will feature four theaters with 16 recovery boxes. The eye clinic will offer 26 consultation rooms, four treatment procedure rooms, pre-operative assessments and complementary exploration services.
Slated for completion in late 2019, Barraquer Dubai will distinguish itself by including VIP suites and services throughout the facility. It will also have a retail pharmacy, optical store and cafe.
