Founded in 1955 as The Libyan University, Garyounis University is oldest and second largest institution of higher education in Libya, serving approximately 35,000 students. The new facilities will modernize the campus and accommodate increased academic and research programs in engineering, natural sciences, law, business, education and information technology. Project scope includes programming, schematic design, and design development for 3,545,000-SF of total building area for 13 specific building types including residence halls, student life building, administrative offices, campus service building, sports complex, shared lecture/classroom facilities, and seven separate college program buildings. The facilities are designed in conjunction with infrastructure improvements to modernize the campus, double student enrollment capacity, and enhance the University's student and faculty overall quality of life. Sustainable design is an important element of the campus designs, with a heavy focus on solar control, passive ventilation, and water conservation. The project is currently on hold.
