Hennepin County Public Safety Facility

Minneapolis, Minnesota

This facility features two levels below grade and seven levels above. The main entrance, which provides access for court and jail visitors, is primarily a non-secure area, as is the second level. Floors three through seven contain inmate housing. The facility includes 270 cells (expandable to 1,020), intake, kitchen, laundry and command center, sheriff's staff lockers, training rooms, three arraignment courts, judges chambers, court administration and parking, and offices for community correction, public defender, and the city and county attorneys. The design used recycled materials in a number of unique applications. Carpet was made from recycled plastic bottles, and flooring in the staff exercise area was from recycled tires. Eighty percent of existing building materials, obtained from the demolition of a building on the new site, were recycled in another form. In addition, recycled paint was used throughout the new facility.
