South Region High School No. 9
Los Angeles, California
The South Region High School No. 9 draws upon nature and the nearby Los Angeles River as a source of its design inspiration. The innovative design for the campus buildings bend to frame a central courtyard, creating a sheltered safe zone for students and the libraries open to courtyards to promote an inside-outside learning environment. The covered lunch shelter is an undulating canopy, with the form and color mimicking the rhythm and dynamic nature of the river. Sustainable elements include sun shades for solar control and concrete mixed with fly-ash to reuse manufacturing waste, and open green space with shaded trees to take advantage of the local climate.
