Pepperdine University Church of Christ Conference Center
Situated on a dramatic hilltop site, this new facility for the University Church of Christ commands a dramatic view of the Pacific Ocean and Malibu coastline. A 1,500-seat worship space, fellowship hall, and child development center comprise the facility's key elements. The program also includes offices, classrooms, and a 200-car parking garage. Indoor and outdoor spaces are carefully interwoven and connected by a series of covered walkways.
The worship space contains amphitheater-style seating around a raised platform that can be reconfigured for services, lectures, and music programs. A high, curved ceiling encloses the space, with views to a private garden behind the altar. A smaller chapel looks out over a reflecting pool to the ocean beyond. The chapel is top-lit from a 60-FT lantern tower where the image of the cross is patterned in the glass. The curving forms of the fellowship hall and child development center follow the contour of the hill to take advantage of views to the south and east. The large fellowship hall may be subdivided and contains an intimate fireside room and library. The child development center is located underneath the fellowship hall, with play yards directly in front of each classroom giving easy access to sunlight and fresh air. A drop-off adjacent to the street permits direct entry to the center without having to go up to the plaza level.
