Roman Tmetuchl International Airport (ROR) - Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Facility

Airai, Palau

The Pacific Island country of Palau required airport improvements that fit harmoniously with local construction elements and techniques. With extensive experience in the region, LEO A DALY designed a two-story, three-bay aircraft rescue and firefighting facility (ARFF) station situated to provide the best level of service and safety for the airfield. The ARFF provides nearly complete visual coverage of the entire runway, and houses three fire trucks and six firefighters, as well as a supplemental aviation weather reporting station (SAWRS) facility. Fast-tracked repairs were initiated for the airport’s only runway, completing the time-critical maintenance on time and under budget. The design has received a positive response from the FAA's pacific region's aviation specialists, who noted its excellent balance between form, function, aesthetics, utility, and reasonable cost.
