Theatre Arts Building
Santa Monica, California
Santa Monica College’s Theater Arts building conforms to the master plan intent of interconnected urban design with outdoor space. Distinguished by a unique origami-like folded plane metal roof, the building embodies the signature individuality of the Theatre Arts program. Displaying an industrial aesthetic, the building exterior is wrapped in a matte silver, corrugated metal skin combined with tilt-up concrete walls, clear glass, and a standing-seam metal roof. The facility is an award-winning, dramatic centerpiece of the evolving campus and includes a 264-seat theater with full backstage capabilities, an experimental “black box” performance space, lobby, box office, gift shop, dressing rooms, classrooms, and offices. The theater and classrooms greatly expand the department’s teaching capabilities and reinforce the highly-regarded program’s presence on campus.
