Santa Monica College's new theatre arts building serves as a dramatic centerpiece to its evolving campus. The new building includes a 300-seat theatre with full backstage capabilities, a “black box” performance space, lobby, shop, dressing rooms, classrooms, and offices.
The theatre and classrooms greatly expand the department’s teaching capabilities and reinforce the programs’ presence on campus. The design is distinguished by a distinctive roof, an origami-like folded plane of metal that soars over the high walls of the theatre and lobby. The roof creates a unique profile, a “signature” for the program and the campus that embodies the energy and drama of the theatre arts program.
