GSI Lumonics, an industrial laser equipment manufacturer, required a functional building expressing its corporate image and technical complexity. As we programmed it, we identified GSI's culture, processes and operations, which influenced design. It was split into an office and manufacturing plant, each differentiated by color.
The office component includes a product display center for customers. A skylight creates natural light through the midsection. The manufacturing area is an open space where assembly teams move from station to station. Isolation pads contain vibration levels. These solutions were based on the needs of a laser production facility, but were largely based on its operational use, such as creating clean environments to prevent dust and static electricity.
The exterior and landscaping were important components to GSI and the community. Natural vegetation and topography determined landscaping, including two ponds flanking the driveway. The building's color and exterior stone are highlighted by southern sun exposure.
